Marine Corps Close Order Drill
Position of Attention:
The Position of Attention indicates that you are alert and ready for instructions. Come to attention with smartness and snap at the commands FALL IN or ATTENTION. While at attention, you move only as ordered until given AT EASE, REST, FALL OUT, or you are dismissed.
To come to attention:
(1) Bring your heels to touch.
(2) Keeping your heels touching, turn your feet outward at a 45-degree angle.
(3) Keep legs straight but do not lock the knees.
(4) Hips and shoulders level and chest lifted.
(5) Arms hang naturally, thumbs along trouser seams, palms facing inward toward legs, and fingers joined in their natural curl (clenched fists).
(6) Head and body erect. Look straight ahead. Mouth closed and chin pulled slightly.
(7) Stand still and do not talk.
Right Face:
On the command “FACE,” raise your left heel and right toe slightly. Pivot your right fool to the right on your right heel and your left foot to the right on your left toes. Left leg should be straight but not stiff.
Next, quickly and smartly place the left foot beside the right and stand at the position of attention.
Left Face:
“Left, Face” is executed exactly like “Right Face”, switching left for right and right for left.
About Face:
On the command “About,” shift weight to left leg. On the command “FACE,” move your right toe six inches behind and slightly to the left of your left heel. Keep your left foot in place. Distribute weight evenly on the left heel and ball of the right foot.
Next, turn quickly and smartly (on the left heel and ball of the right foot) to the right until facing to the rear. Keep knees straight, but not locked during the pivot. Thumbs remain on trouser seems. If executed correctly, you will be at the position of attention facing opposite your original direction.
Hand Salute:
The purpose of the hand salute is to demonstrate mutual respect and courtesy between members of military organizations and to show respect to national colors. The command is “Hand, SALUTE.” To return to the position of attention the command is “Ready, TWO.”
(1) On the command “SALUTE”, raise your right hand quickly and smartly to the tip of your cover slightly to the right of your right eye. Fingers are extended straight and joined with the thumb along the forefinger. You should be able to see your right palm when looking straight ahead. Upper arm should be parallel with the deck. Elbow is in line with the body and forearm is at a 45-degree angle. Wrist and hand are straight and in line with the forearm.
(2) At the command “TWO,” move hand quickly and smartly in the most direct manner back to its normal position by your side.
(3) A salute can be rendered from attention, or while walking. Do not render a salute while seated in a vehicle unless you are an officer and are returning the salute. When walking, it is not necessary to halt to salute. Salutes are rendered between 6 and 30 paces from the person or colors to be saluted. Hold the salute until the person or color saluted has passed or the salute is returned, then cut.
Parade Rest:
On the command “Parade,” shift weight to the right leg.. On the command “REST,” quickly and smartly move the left foot twelve inches to the left and clasp hands behind the back just below the belt with the left hand against the back, and the right hand inside the left. Right thumb lightly grasps left thumb. Heels remain on line and body weight is distributed equally on both legs. Fingers are extended and joined with the palms facing away from the body. Elbows in line with the body. No speaking or moving is permitted The only command you may receive while at parade rest is “ATTENTION.”
At Ease:
“At Ease” is executed in one count on the command “AT EASE”. Keeping your right foot in place quickly and smartly move the left foot twelve inches to the left. You may move your left foot (not your right), and must remain silent. This is similar to parade rest with the exception that you can move and you don’t have to put hands behind back.
Rest:
“Rest” is executed in one count on the command “Rest”. Keeping your right foot in place quickly and smartly move the left foot twelve inches to the left. You may move your left foot (not your right).. This is similar to parade rest and at ease, with the exception that you can move, you don’t have to put hands behind back and you can talk.
Fall Out:
On the command “FALL OUT”, leave your position in ranks, but remain nearby or move to a pre-designated area. On the command “FALL IN”, return to your place in ranks at the position of attention.
