Reporting For Duty At USMC Boot Camp
Arrival:
You will probably arrive at MCRD (MCRD San Diego or MCRD Parris Island) at night. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by a Drill Instructor who will board the bus, introduce himself, welcome (the term welcome is used lightly) you to MCRD, and give you a short list of instructions. Among those instructions will be:
1) How to address all Marines while aboard MCRD:
Yes, Sir/Ma’am; No, Sir/Ma’am; Aye Sir/Ma’am. Do you understand? Yes, Sir!
2) How to speak while aboard MCRD:
Third person and sound off. Refer to yourself as “This recruit”. All verbal communication will be sounded off, i.e. yell at the top of your lungs. (See below for more Marine Corps terms and abbreviations.)
3) What to do next:
Get off the bus, stand on the yellow footprints and wait for further instructions.
Receiving:
Once you step foot on the yellow footprints, you will be given a follow on set of instructions for what you will do next. You are now in “Receiving” Phase. During Receiving, you will conduct all of your basic administrative, medical, and preparatory actions required before you start training. Things accomplished during receiving will be:
-Contraband Inspection:
You will be inspected to ensure you did not bring any unauthorized items with you. Unauthorized items are anything in addition to the clothes you are wearing, orders from your Recruiter, prescription eye wear, and prescription medications. Any contraband will be taken and removed at this time.
-Haircut:
All hair will be shaved off on males. Females will be required to ensure their hair does not touch the collar of their uniform.
-Medical:
Shots, Physical, Screening Tests
-Dental:
Screening, minor dental work
-Administrative:
Processing information into admin systems like pay, orders, etc.
-Urinalysis:
Test you for illegal substances
-Legal:
Ensure you didn’t lie to your Recruiter about anything.
-Uniform Issue:
You will be issued all the uniforms required for training.
-Gear Issue:
You will beissued all the gear required for training.
-Initial Strength Test:
During Receiving you will be led around the MCRD by Drill Instructors. These will not be the Drill Instructors that will lead you through the 3 Training Phases of Bootcamp. You will think your Receiving Drill Instructors are the most evil things you have ever met in your life. Stand by, because they are nothing compared to your actual Drill Instructors that will lead you through training and make you into a Marine.
On the last day of Receiving, you will conduct your Initial Strength Test (IST). Keep in mind, your Drill Instructors are watching you take your IST, you just don’t know it because you haven’t met them yet. Upon completion of your IST, you will meet your company staff and Drill Instructors for t
he first time. This is known as “Pick Up”.
Pick Up:
Following your IST, you will return to the squadbay, take a PT shower (quick), and standby for your company staff and Drill Instructors. First you will meet your company staff. They consist of:
-Series Chief Drill Instructor (SSgt or GySgt)
-Company 1stSgt (1stSgt)
-Series Commander (1stLt or Capt)
-Company Commander (1stLt or Capt)
At the conclusion of the introductions, the Company Commander will introduce your Drill Instructor Staff. Once he is complete, he will turn you over to the Senior Drill Instructor. The Senior Drill Instructor will brief you on what you can expect from your Drill Instructors, and what is expected of you. Once the Senior Drill Instructor has completed his instructions, this is when chaos begins. For the rest of Pick Up day, you will spend time setting up the squadbay, squaring away your gear, and getting everything ready to begin training. It all sounds very simple on paper, but this is likely to be the most chaos, confusion, and friction you have ever experienced in your entire life. This is your introduction to military life, and it is meant to be a shock. This is when you are beginning to be broken out of your civilian ways, and learning to do things as a Marine. Teamwork is a must in order to survive at bootcamp.
